Post 14.

I had a skirt I made in the begining of the year that I had decided not to use, made from polyester. I began to experiment what happens when you so things to polyester and found that by burning you get a melted effect,by dying with food dye and ink the dye spreads like a mould might, and by bleaching i got spots that looked like a white mould. I decided to use the skirt and burnt, bleached and dyed it.

I decided to grow my own mushrooms, but after some research I discovered it takes at least 4 weeks to grow the quickest type, and nearly impossible to do in winter, so instead I found a way to grow bacteria.

I got an agar plate (a shallow dish used to culture bacteria). It's used for science and causes germs and bacterias to grow alot faster then normal because of a special gel layer on the bottom of them

And placed germs in it, after keeping it over the weekend in a warm place a mould begins to grow and spread in it, like this.

Post 11.

I made some sketchs and ink drawings of mould on trees. One to me looked abit like the body of a perspn. Because of this I want to put a manniquien in the middle of my puff balls and have the ,mould wrapped around it the same way it was around the tree. This will also symbolise nature, decay and mould creeping into people and their homes.

Post 10.

Ive decided to leave the puff balls on the ceiling undyed. Im doing this because i plan on sticking them all down the window and wall and piling them up on the floor. I plan on having them looking pretty on the ceiling because some mould such as this one is quite beautiful.

However, as the mould grows down the wall Im going to make it uglyer and uglyer, I want to express and show the way mould spreads and grows, and gets worse and worse as it spreads. By the time it reaches the floor i want the puff balls black, shriveled and disguisting looking.  It should contrast nicely with the pretty mould on the ceiling.

I began making puff balls in all different sizes, I made about 40 and stuck them very close together up on the ceiling, I liked the way this looked and made another 50. Some were very small and because of this it looks alot less than 90 so I began makinging them a lot bigger.

The next thing I tried to do was recreate the mushroom spores. I tried doing this in a few ways, scrunching paper, ripping and glueing paper, stitching paper, pulling paper together with threads. I then did all this with material to like jersey, polyester and felt.
I eventually setteled on paper puff balls.

I picked this because I thought it looked similar to some of the mould microscopic spores

I then began making a few out of brown paper and dying them different colours. I used inks, quink, bleach, tea and coffee, oyster sauce, food dye and nail varnish. I also burnt a few.

Post 7.

After researching mushroom spores I decided I wanted to document what I found, but in an artistic way. I made paper and dyed them using ink and quink. I then made a little book which I intend to use as a sculpture. I made it by sticking threads to the little squares of paper, I then Knotted and wove each sheet together, I made the cover out of thick card, dyed it with quink and added bleach and water, then put pva glue over it to make it shiney.  I then put in textures and tried to recreate the look of different moulds in the book. I used felt, fluff, glue, paper, tissue and other materials to do this.

I began looking up what mushroom spores looked like, I wanted to know what else I could use in a mushroom apart from the obvious. I looked at mushrooms and various fungus under a microscope, as well as looking up photos of spores. Heres some of what I found.

I found the circuler spores the most interesing and decided I wanted to do something with them.

Post 5.

I made a series of Urban Decay element, rust, peeling paint, mould and fungus/mushrooms.
I put them on square wooden boards which I painted white and lined them up. From this I decided the best thing to mainly focus on would be mould, mushrooms and fungus.

Post 4.

I began then making casts of mushrooms from clay and sylacone and making plaster casts of muchrooms.
Some came out quite well as the were fairly detailed. Next I began playing around with the plaster mix mesurments to try recreate the texture of a mushroom. I eventually got one quite close and made some casts out of it, I then put arranged them in a mushroom box.

After making my mind up I wanted to do my project on peeling paint, rust and mould I began looking up artist that made works based around the same topics.
Here are some works and artists I found.

I began going around Limerick and photographing my own Urban Decay photos. I then tried editing some on Photoshop to try make them look abit more interesting. These are a few of the ones I took.

I took this one through a broken window of an abandond building. I liked the textures of the stone wall and I liked the contrast the stone made with the metal chair which was flung on the ground.

I took this photo through some railings. I loved the wayy through all the plants there was still a basketball hoop standing up when everything else around it had fallen. Because of this I highlighted the hoop in purple.

I took this oicture because I liked the effect the peeling paint gave, this helped me decide I wanted to do some work on peeling paint.

I took this because i liked the way the bright green door stood out even through the dirt and other elements of decay which covered it.

I started doing my project on Urban Envirement at the begining of the year. I had choose urban decay to do,I began basing it on graffiti mostly, but after the first assesment I changed to basing my project around mould and mushrooms mainly, as well as peeling paint and rust.
At the begining I made stencils, got photos of famous icons and turned them into stencils, photographed graffiti and researched artists such as Banksy and D*.

When i changed my project I began by looking up photos by Urban Decay photographers. Like this one by  Scallop Holden.
I also found this grat website of Urban Decay photography.
